Novelizations became popular at a time when home video was either unavailable or just too expensive to own. So these books were, in essence, cheap keepsakes after seeing and enjoying a film in theaters. In the case of 1981’s The Funhouse, however, the novelization came out first. This was on account of the film, directed by Tobe Hooper, taking longer to complete than originally anticipated. It seemed unwise to release the book first, considering the risk of spoilers. As it turned out, though, it was hard to spoil anything when the novel and film were as different as night and day.
Dean Koontz, who used multiple pseudonyms throughout the early years of his career, had yet to achieve any substantial success when he agreed to write the novelization for The Funhouse. On top of the financial incentive, the proposal of adapting Larry Block’s screenplay simply intrigued Koontz. After all,...

Ahead of Pixelsplit and publisher Daedalic Entertainment’s psychological horror game Reveil being released tomorrow, the teams have given fans a taste of the game’s score with the release of three tracks from the game’s soundtrack. Written and performed by singer-songwriter Arina Tara, the songs are inspired by the game’s story and “capture the mind-bending atmosphere perfectly.”
Artist Arina Tara studied both songwriting and game-design to combine her two passions music and games. Her soundtrack also impacted the general sound design of Reveil. For example, the melody of “We will go” was also used for some elements, such as the music box in the first chapter, and thus found its way from the song into the game. You can check out the three tracks on Spotify, iTunes and Deezer.
Fans can experience the full 14-track soundtrack by Arina Tara purchasing the Funhouse Edition of Reveil for PlayStation,...

Believe it or not, "The Sopranos" just turned 25. Yes, 25 years ago, the medium of TV changed forever when David Chase's mafia series kicked off what we think of today as the "peak TV era." The impact and influence of "The Sopranos" cannot be overstated — without "The Sopranos," the TV landscape as we know it for the last 25 years would not exist. There would be no "Mad Men," no "Breaking Bad," no "Succession." Watching "The Sopranos" now, you can see the influence on the two-plus decade's worth of shows to come.
While "The Sopranos" started off strong, the common consensus is that the show really became the juggernaut that we know it as in the fifth episode of season 1, titled "College." Why? Because that was the first episode we saw Tony Soprano whack someone. While it seems commonplace now to have an unlikable protagonist leading a show, in 1999, when the episode in question first aired,...

In the opening credits of The Sopranos, it takes around 90 seconds for Tony to get from the Lincoln Tunnel to his New Jersey driveway. And in that time, you could bang out three episodes of the HBO series — provided you catch them on TikTok. To celebrate 25th years since the groundbreaking show hit the air, forever changing the face of television, HBO is releasing each episode of The Sopranos…in 25-second chunks. That means you can binge-watch the mob drama in just over 35 minutes!
Of course, this is just about the worst way for potential viewers to experience The Sopranos for first-time, but it is a nice nostalgic recap for fans. Granted, at such short runtimes, major details — and even notable deaths, as (not) seen in the TikTok for season two finale “Funhouse” — are lacking. But it is sort of a fun and generationally friendly promotion if you want to...

As of today, the traditionally protective Walt Disney Co will have to deal with an onslaught of Mickey Mouse parodies, mockeries and likely rather explicit variations as the iconic character slips into the public domain.
Sorta.
In the sober light of 2024, Steamboat Willie, the 1928 short that effectively launched the empire that Walt built, can now be used by anyone and everyone. The legal status of Mickey and Minnie Mouse from Steamboat Willie and Plane Crazy, from earlier that same year, has been long fought over and probably not something to which Disney was looking forward. Yet, in a new year that also sees Virginia Woolf’s groundbreaking Orlando, Peter Pan, Charlie Chaplin’s The Circus, Buster Keaton’s The Cameraman and Tigger from AA Milne’s The House at Pooh Corner now in the public domain, if you are anticipating a Steamboat Willie free-for-all, think again.

After "Saturday Night Live" ended season 48 a little prematurely back in the spring due to the Hollywood strikes beginning, the late night sketch comedy show returned for season 49 this weekend. Despite the fact that the Screen Actors Guild is still on strike while negotiating for a new deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), SAG-AFTRA gave its full support for the cast of "SNL" to return to work, which meant former cast member Pete Davidson finally got to make his hosting debut.
While it might seem like a quick turnaround for Davidson to return as host so soon after leaving at the end of season 47, plenty of other more recent cast members have come back to the show as host just as quickly, such as Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, and Bill Hader. However, since Davidson wasn't exactly known for many recurring characters or impressions, it didn't...

This article contains spoilers for "The Simpsons" season 35, episode 1 — "A Mid-Childhood Night's Dream"
Back in 2000, "The Sopranos" released a groundbreaking season 2 finale in which Tony spends half the runtime experiencing some food poisoning-induced fever dreams. Although the show was already no stranger to dream sequences by this point, "Funhouse" was the most the show had indulged in so far, fully embracing the weird and fragmented experience we all feel while we're asleep. Tony's mind takes him from place to place, from one strange, stilted conversation with someone he knows to another, all of which feels designed to confront him with the uncomfortable fact that one of the guys in his crew is a rat. Deep down, Tony's known this all season, but it's only through these dream sequences that his mind finally forces him to confront it head-on.

People love reality shows, right? It’s when they get too real that folks start questioning, sometimes. Unfortunately, people love mayhem, carnage, and struggle as much as they think they love heroism, good news, and triumphs. The masses like controversy and the ability to watch the misery of others for a bit of entertainment and to make themselves feel better at times. That sounds pretty cynical, right? Unfortunately, Funhouse makes this point quite joyfully with a group of contestants that are all former or disgraced celebrities selected by an eccentric billionaire to play a deadly game of survival. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for CSI: Vegas Episode 6 “Funhouse.”] While Joshua Folsom (Matt Lauria) and Allie Rajan (Mandeep Dhillon) are investigating a bit of a horror show — murders at a clown-themed hotel! — those back at the Crime Lab are in the middle of their own nightmare: lockdown, potentially with the prime suspect in the seasons-long evidence tampering case in their midst. The latest CSI: Vegas first points the finger Chris Park’s (Jay Lee) way, when they trace back chemicals used to clean up part of the crime scene of Martin Kline’s murder — he was working with someone — to him. And he took all the grenades in the lab without signing them out. But, it turns out, one of theirs wasn’t used to kill Kline and someone stole those chemicals from him at a crime scene. In fact, it all leads back to none other than Anson Wix (Jamie McShane), the lawyer heading the class action.

Hello, dear readers! We’re back with a brand new assortment of horror and sci-fi home media releases this week, and as we creep closer and closer towards Halloween, there are definitely a handful of titles coming out on Tuesday that would be fun to check out as you get ready for the spooky season. Arrow Video is keeping busy with a handful of releases, including a 4K version of Dario Argento’s The Cat O’ Nine Tails and Blind Beast. And speaking of Argento, Blue Underground is showing Two Evil Eyes - his collaboration with George A. Romero - some love with their 4K presentation of the film. Larry Cohen’s A Return to Salem’s Lot is finally getting a Blu-ray, and if you missed the latest Conjuring film in theaters earlier this year, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is headed home on multiple formats this week as well.

Anyone who has read any of my writing on Daily Dead or listened to me on the Corpse Club podcast probably already knows what a Tobe Hooper fan I am, and it’s his 1981 slasher The Funhouse that first started me down the path of reassessing his work and made me fall completely in love with him as a filmmaker. It’s rarely talked about as one of his greater efforts and is too often dismissed as a generic slasher, a characterization with which I could not disagree more. Not only is it a great horror film, but it’s also my favorite film from my favorite filmmaker.
Though he's something of a brand name and considered a "Master of Horror," Tobe Hooper has made only two movies that get much love and respect. The first, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, is rightfully considered a classic, albeit one that appeals primarily to diehard horror fans.

Finally, the Daily Dead “Class Of” series has reached my beloved birth year, 1981. For the genre, 1981 signifies an important moment in the history of horror. With the introduction of two slasher icons, Michael Myers in 1978 and Jason Voorhees in 1980; the beginning of the sequel boom that would dominate the rest of the decade was born in 1981 with Halloween 2 and Friday the 13th Part 2. These two sequels are merely the introduction to the rise of slasher cinema for the 80s, with 1981 providing a variety of examples like The Burning, Graduation Day, The Prowler, Funhouse, Happy Birthday to Me, Final Exam, Night School, Student Bodies, and My Bloody Valentine.
1981 also proved the best year in the history of horror for werewolf movies. The iconic American Werewolf in London set the gold standard in practical transformation effects. The Howling is a demonstration of how horror and humor can coexist perfectly. Wolfen...

From writer/director Jason William Lee comes Funhouse, the latest and greatest in streaming entertainment that promises to be the ultimate reality show to ever hit the internet.
Funhouse puts a bunch of D-list celebrities in a house, Big Brother style, while the internet watches. Reality stars, social media personalities, influencers, and the like, all competing for the grand prize of five million dollars while enjoying their time in the spotlight. At first, it seems like a regular D-list celebrity reality show. The participants (all varying flavors of douchebag) will get up to various antics, spend some time in the confessional, and periodically, the audience will vote on who gets to stay and who has to go. The twist is that getting kicked out of the house is more than just getting banished from the show. Losing candidates are subjected to various life-threatening scenarios, which usually end in violent, bloody death as the world watches.

Dubbed “Axis Sally” for broadcasting Nazi propaganda to American troops during World War II, Mildred’s story exposes the dark underbelly of the Third Reich’s hate-filled propaganda machine, her eventual capture in Berlin, and subsequent trial for treason against the United States after the war.
Mitch Pileggi, Thomas Kretschmann, Lala Kent, Carsten Norgaard, and Swen Temmel round out the cast. The pic, which is based on William E. Owen’s novel, Axis Sally Confidential, is also available on-demand. William and Vance Owen’s book Axis Sally Confidential,...

After spending most of May dipping its toes in the water with medium-budget films, Hollywood is finally putting some heavyweights into the ring as Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II have their long-awaited debuts this Memorial Day weekend. At last, the summer blockbuster season is here. If audiences flock to these two newcomers as hoped, we should see the biggest weekend at the domestic box office since March 2020. It should also become the pandemic weekend champion, beating out April 23-25, 2021, which had a total gross of $57 million, with Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train leading the pack.
We are still a world away from pre-pandemic numbers, however, where $150+ million overall weekend grosses in May were the norm. For now the combination of capacity restrictions, closed theaters, and audience hesitancy will continue to blunt grosses, but having stars headline a sequel from Paramount and a prequel from Disney--along...

"Some will weep for you. Others will laugh." Magnet Releasing has revealed a new official US trailer for the indie horror Funhouse, made by Canadian filmmaker Jason William Lee. This originally premiered in 2019 and is finally getting a VOD release in the next few weeks. When eight "C-list" celebrities from around the globe are invited to compete in an online "Big Brother" style reality show, they arrive at the house and soon realize that they are playing for their very lives; those voted off suffer horrific consequences, broadcast live to the entire world. Scary! But also kind of fun? A very dark remix of celebrity internet voyeur culture. Funhouse co-stars Valter Skarsgård, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Khamisa Wilsher, Christopher Gerard, Karolina Benefield, Amanda Howells, and Mathias Retamal. This isn't the most original concept, but it doesn't look so bad. The reaction shots of all the people watching are hilarious. Here's the...

New Pretty Boy Poster and Photos: "Pretty Boy, the follow up to the award-winning film Blind, has completed principal photography. Pretty Boy, directed by Marcel Walz and written by Joe Knetter, continues the story they set in motion in Blind.
Pretty Boy just finished the Post Production with Company 3
Marcel Walz (Director)
“Filming Pretty Boy the way we did was a dream comes true for me. It is beautiful, fun, gory and creepy. Seeing our Killer, “Pretty Boy”, slashing through this love letter to the 80s is what I have always wanted to do! Also, as an LGBTQ Director, I could go crazy on set design for the Valentine’s party and overall theme in the movie, so be prepared for a lot of pinks, glitter and some intestines Lol!“
Joe Knetter (Writer)
“Filming Pretty Boy was an amazing experience. Every single person on the cast and crew brought their ‘A’ game.

Tagline: "How Many Likes for a Life?" Funhouse is a co-production between Sweden and Canada. Featuring cast and crew from both territories, Funhouse takes a reality show a little too far. An update on the film's production and upcoming distribution are hosted here. The long synopsis, from Sandcastle Pictures, talks of a "Big Brother" styled show.
