Cheap looking, poor acting, and terrible editing. The practical effects were okay, but that's it.
manuelasaez19 April 2017
I love anthology films, especially when they are of the horror variety, but this one was just a complete failure from beginning to end. The acting was atrocious for most of the segments, the script was inane and poorly realized, and the way the film was edited was so amateurish, I wonder if the director hired one of his kids to do it. The only saving grace about this film was the SFX. Some of the creatures really did look frightening, and had the film focused more on them, it wouldn't have been so bad. Instead, we got a lot of crappy acting, a lot of simplified dialogue, and some horrendous pacing. Not a quality film in the slightest, anyone would do themselves a favor and avoid this travesty and never speak of it again.

When do I get to kill somebody?

Warning: Spoilers
PLOT SPOILER REVIEW FOR TREKKIES This is a found footage tape that appears to be hyped. The film cares nothing about chronology and the second segment of ghost hunters with a twist I found to be the most entertaining, and have no idea how it tied into the rest of the film. Some people do experimentation and discover there are Scalosians here on Earth, Scalosians who have fun with Amanda "roofie" Courtney (Brittany Underwood) while she sleeps and does mental torture on her which she shares with us in a long boring ill acted monologue. Camera footage was mostly bad angles and bad lighting. I have never shot anything that amateur and I can't even spell camerea. The acting wasn't there. Special effects include electric interference on cameras, a floating playing card, a voice distorter and a rubber mask...or yes people standing still. The neck thing was good.

Guide: No sex or nudity. No swearing that I recall. Some girls on Cam who pretend like they are going to do something. From now on I am only watching cam girls who don't speak English.

Winner of numerous indie/horror awards and third place at the Indie Gathering International Film Festival. This didn't appeal to me like it did to others. Seemed slow and choppy

Miss Mash of Found Footage
jhmoondance24 November 2021
This was jumping from one film to another too much for my liking. Do not get me wrong......it was rather average.

The stories were bland n not much thought had gone into them. They are wanna be copies of other found footage films. There are 4 stories in all n all were pretty much lacking in strength acting n character build up.

There was no tension suspense or charisma n either of the short films.

The endings were varied but of a similar nature.

I gave 4 stars .....one for each.

I recommend only if you like found footage, otherwise it's not worth a watch.

Warning: Spoilers
Terrible writing, bad editing, stock sound effects that I've heard used in student projects a hundred times, four completely unrelated stories, all of these things come together to make maybe the worst found-footage anthology film I've ever seen. The Dark Tapes tries desperately to capture the same feeling that the V/H/S series evoked when it first began, but fails miserably for many of the aforementioned reasons. At one point about midway through the film, an "Inter-dimensional Entity" (clearly a man in a cheap Halloween costume, some of the worst practical effects I've seen in a good while) delivers the following line through a bad "demonic" voice modulator: "I am not some simply some ghoul from your pathetic realm!"

I physically cringed at that point, and the film only continued to get worse as it went on (Spoilers ahead). Despite what many of the descriptions say, there is no linking factor in the over-arching story that brings together, justifies, or even attempts to explain any context for the other 3 stories. There's a ghost hunting segment that turns out to be about serial killers, an alien invasion story that starts with a rape, and some demonic cannibal cam girls, whose stories break up the framing narrative, which is a completely detached story about how sleep paralysis is really inter-dimensional creatures that just like to hang out and creep on sleeping folks for reasons that are never addressed or explained. All of the expositionary dialogue is clunky and overbearing, the acting is stale and there's not a single notable performance among the cast. There were certain concepts that could have been really interesting if they were executed with some competence, but as it stands The Dark Tapes simply doesn't cut it.

If you're a fan of horror, found footage films or even just decent movies, I'd highly recommend you skip this one.

I once read that if you give a typewriter infinite time to a monkey, such monkey will eventually type Hamlet, for instance.

In the case of "Dark Tape", somebody gave a bunch untalented people some filming equipment and not enough time... The result is "Dark Tapes".

Pretty bad - Not the worst, but close
alycejunker4 September 2018
I really didn't expect too much from this movie. I can honestly say that I have never seen an anthology horror movie that I like, and I can add this movie to that list. Not great acting, pretty cheesy dialogue, obviously a low budget, and costumes lacking imagination

HOWEVER, the stories had some potential! Given a better budget and more time (i.e. extending an individual story into a full length movie), and stop the stupid handi-cam/skype filming style, which has been done enough now movie creators, there could have been a half-way decent horror movie here! But they made terrible choices and it was bad.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen.
DrRicketts15 July 2017
Honestly, there is bad, and then there's bad. I rarely give a movie such a low rating, but this one deserves it. I haven't looked into the background of this yet, but it seems no one, and I mean no one associated with this movie has ever done one before. the script reads like it was written by the failing high school student in AV class, the editing is all over the place, to the point that you can't even tell what's going on anymore, none of the movies even remotely come together in a coherent plot, the sound effects are WAY over the top, I can go on and on. I don't understand how these people get money to do this, its the worst filming imaginable. and the worst part? some of the stories had potential! this found footage-type movie is just overdone, and this movie actually gave me a headache.

Fresh take on found footage
mmorganswope19 April 2017
The Dark Tapes is a four story horror anthology. I'm a big fan of horror anthologies and the stories in this one are all original and had surprise endings that I didn't see coming. There are a lot of found footage films out there, but The Dark Tapes felt fresh and was the most unique found footage film I've seen in a long time. The stories are well written and entertaining and I think this film proves that you don't have to have a big budget to make a good movie. There are some genuinely creepy moments and not a whole lot of blood and gore,so I would think this film would appeal to a wider audience than some of your "typical" horror films. This movie is anything but typical. If you like horror and want to see found footage presented in a new way, definitely check out this anthology. It's a lot of fun.

A found footage indie anthology
Leofwine_draca18 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
THE DARK TAPES is yet another found footage horror effort which mixes in science fiction elements for an anthology tape. The format is immediately recognisable from the likes of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY while there's some social media activity to get it bang up to date. Sadly, the lack of money means that ghosts and demons are discussed rather than shown, and it's all very static and talky when it should be involving and thrilling.

Amazing Found Footage Experience
chadinterrupted20 April 2017
I liked it so much I'm here actually writing a review about it wishing I could see more. Every noise in the dark of my room has me on edge. I almost can't even sit here and write this because I feel vulnerable not being in my bed covered with blankets. I am trying to think of the fastest thing to write so I can not have to sit here anymore. It was a very creative found footage movie. If there was any criticism I had it's that every segment had a very similar tone in the same way an artist's new album can sometimes almost be too consistent. Like every song sounded the same. But at least it was a good song!

'THE DARK TAPES': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

An indie anthology horror flick, which interlocks four different tales of creatures, demons, ghosts and other things in the paranormal world. The film runs 98 minutes long, and it was made on a budget of just $65,000. It also features an ensemble cast (of mostly unknown actors) lead by Cortney Palm. First time feature filmmakers Michael McQuown and Vincent J. Guastini directed and co-produced the flick. McQuown also wrote the script (he previously co-wrote 2005's 'THE PERFECT MAN') and he also served as the film's editor and cinematographer as well. I found it to be a mostly well made, and impressive little indie horror flick; highlighted by Cortney Palm's performance.

The movie contains four different chapters, each telling a different supernatural tale. One revolves around a couple experiencing paranormal activities in the house they recently moved in to. Another story tells the tale of two lesbian lovers, that make a living performing sexual activities online (for paying customers), and one begins blacking out and not remembering certain strange experiences. Another story involves a woman who's raped at a party, and she then becomes obsessed with stopping persistent unwanted paranormal intruders. A fourth story is intercut between the others, and it revolves around three paranormal investigators, that take their investigations into uncharted new dangerous territory.

The movie is a little too slow-paced, drawn-out, and a tad too over complicated in places. For a film made on just a $65,000 budget though, I think it's mostly impressive. I love indie horror flicks like this, especially well made anthologies. This one delivers some nice effects, some cool dark imagery, and some pretty clever twists; it just sometimes takes a little too long to get to them. The acting, with the exception of Palm, is pretty amateurish though. The film probably won't become a cult classic of any kind, but I think it's still definitely worth the rental price. I bought it on Amazon Video for $9.99, and I don't regret it.

So bad it wasn't even good
kjjames8123 April 2017
Oh boy, oh boy, how bad was this film. I was expecting a generally good film but boy I was wrong. I like found footage movies, so I knew I would give this a good look and see what it was like. Almost an hour and forty running time, it was a waste of my time and the film makers time. Out of the full running time there must have been maybe twenty minutes of worthy scenes to watch. One jump scene and one not bad story doesn't make a good movie and distorting a voice to make it seem scary, well that just went out with the ark. Okay the film makers didn't have millions of pounds to make a huge movie but the good bits that were in the film showed potential in them. I was going to give this film one point but fir the scenes I have mentioned I gave it two. Don't waste your time, an awful film.

It's not a movie
varnium6 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is not a movie. It's a collection of short clips with no correlation to each other.

It employees infamous actors and perhaps low budget director as well. There are no connection between one story to another. It just shows a bunch of jump-scares effect, but without any terrifying stuff. In one of the scene, you can clearly see an actor with a part-ghost part-monster costume. Surely, it's a low budget movie with very low quality story line.

I wonder this could ever be on theaters? And who would even want to pay to watch it?

Overrated Amateurish Rubbish
claudio_carvalho1 May 2017
The "found footage" genre usually produces garbage instead of films. "The Dark Tape" is not an exception, but below average. It seems to be a bad cinema project, with terrible story, screenplay, direction, acting, cinematography, no soundtrack; therefore nothing is worthwhile watching and spend time. Maybe school mates, family and friends have voted in IMDb to achieve such high rating. In the end, "The Dark Tapes is an overrated amateurish rubbish. My vote is one.

Scarily....bad!
dreamwalk198620 April 2017
I initially got fooled by the good ratings of this despite me being suspicious, and my god, it's possibly one of the worst horrors I've ever seen.

The acting (if you can call it that) is just abysmal, there is nothing else to say about it. The camera work is terrible and the annoying constant "static effect" always happening. The sounds is passable, and the creature design/effects range from OK to pathetic.

In short, you could probably make a better horror film with 0 budget on your mobile phone, avoid at all costs.

No need to see this one
axelfinnur29 January 2018
This movie is not made with great passon or heart. It is very clear the there was script problems from day one. I was hoping for a film equal to V/H/S but this The Dark Taps is just rubbish.

Not only is the acting stiff and really bad at times, you can alos find terrible errors. For example can you see a reflexion of the dictator in the tv at the end of the first story.

Stay clear of this movie.

A waste of time

I love found footage horror and horror anthologies but this movie is just a mess. The acting is all bad but they didn't have much to work with. The dialogue is unrealistic and the film glitch effect is overused.

5 year-old Ted Bundys coming your way...
fedor81 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Story 1: Fans of M Night Shymyfick should love this because it's dull and has a dumb plot-twist. In fact, any fans of dull and dumb horror containing a major plot-twist should love this nonsense. Suffice it to say that there are no ghosts and the couple are serial-killers who lure ghost-hunting teams so they can kill them. Yes, and their 10 year-old daughter is eager to kill too! Sounds dumb? You bet. 1/10

Story 2: "I am not some flesh-eating ghoul from your pathetic realm", says the ghoul very proudly, with obvious bumhurt. The film-makers were so proud of this scene they repeated it at the end of the episode. Do they actually think the scene will become legendary? Sure, it's not a bad scene, it's shot well, but is that scary? Not really. Mostly because ghouls who boast seem less scary. Boasting is a sign of weakness and who needs weak ghouls? This story is shown in segments unlike the others. Based on the same sci-fi premise as an episode of 60s Star Trek called "Wink Of An Eye". It's one of Star Trek's best despite the usual cheese factor. Could they do it better 50 years later? No, this version of the premise is too underdeveloped. 5/10

Story 3: After the Skype conversation, we have a scene with two lipstick lesbians that literally looks and sounds as if it's a cheaporno. The dialog sounds like Tommy Wiseau - when he isn't even trying. And then - wouldn't you know it - turns out that the lesbians do webcam porn! Thanks, movie, your found-in-sewage crapiness level has just been lowered even further. Dumber yet, the brunette actually convinces a neckbeard to cut his own throat. Despite the fact that he heavily hesitated when he had to "just" cut his hand a few minutes earlier. It is a remarkably dumb scene. 3/10

Story 4: An anorexic actress gets raped then suddenly acquires supernatural powers as a result. Demons or aliens anal-probe her skinny bum. She fights back. In a vague sort of way. Meanwhile, Ryan her love-interest seems pretty blase about all the supernatural hoopla. He doesn't even seem that excited when she offers sex to him. She talks too much. It'd be much better if this cheapo budget film showed us half the things she talked about rather than merely talk about them. The end-twist is pointless and unexplained. 5/10

Intelligently written horror anthology - perfect for the found footage aficionado!
KrisLevin5 May 2017
The Dark Tapes takes full advantage of the potential for creative control the independent film scene offers production teams. So often, I feel disappointed after watching independent films that take the same route (and same shortcuts) as mainstream productions whose content is homogenized, handcuffed by studio memorandums - the same jump scares, the same plot lines, the same character tropes - too little creativity on a platform that offers so much room for innovation.

Following in the footsteps of classic horror compilations, be they also found footage (such as VHS 1 & 2) or standard horror affair (Body Bags, Southbound, Trick 'r Treat, All Hallows Eve), or even further back to the founding fathers of horror anthology (Tales From the Crypt, The Vault of Horrors, Creepshow), The Dark Tapes is sure to deliver if what you are after is a creepy, genuinely-thought provoking anthology horror film that stays true to the found footage format without entering the territory of feeling too contrived. The story is intelligently written and the stories offer enough variety to satiate fans of the weird, fans of sci-fi, monsters, blood 'n guts, and psychological horror alike. This was a great outing and I'm looking forward to the next outing by writer/director Michael McQuown and co!

Ignore previous, don't bother with this
geoff_paddock21 April 2017
The synopsis promised a lot so I was looking forward to this one, but from the first few frames it was a total disappointment. Usual done-to- death found footage tedium - why do they still make this kind of rubbish? Budget was apparently $65k, but to be honest, it looked like it was $65,terrible acting, poor script. Please, no more like this.

A Fun Found Footage Anthology!
gjaneway69-640-64816619 April 2017
This is my first review ever here on ye olde IMDb, been a lurker for many years but never posted a review, but wanted to for this title.

I am a found footage nut, always have been and always will be, i've seen some absolutely dire pieces of filmmaking and some of the best. This definitely falls into the best part of the genre. I'm not going to give much away as it's more fun to go in completely blind not knowing what's to come. This movie is an anthology movie and it's right up there with the likes of similar movies like V/H/S. Without going into details, the wrap around story, the ghosthunting story and the alien story are the best (for me) in this movie.

Give it a go, if you are a found footage fan you will love it, if you don't like found footage give it a go it might surprise you.

A creepy found footage experience
eddie_baggins1 May 2017
Just when you think the found footage horror genre might be heading for a recession of sorts on the back of some rather forgettable outings over the last 5 or so years, along comes yet another finely tuned example of why the sub-genre took off in the first place, this time in the form of impressive independent filmmakers Michael McQuown's and Vincent J. Guastini's The Dark Tapes.

A collection of individually themed episodes, linked between a continuing component that occurs before each new event (or dark tape), The Dark Tapes follows on from films like the VHS series or Tales From Halloween before it to keep things fresh and coming at a steady pace by never allowing it's episodes to linger on too long to make sure the audience feels like they're on their toes as to what's waiting for them around the corner.

As is to be expected from films of this nature, not every episode hits a home run and McQuown (who directs all bar one of the films segments) can at times be accused of overusing effects such as audio crackling or on screen tampering to enhance the whole "found footage" vibe but when The Dark Tapes hits it hits hard and there are some memorably horrific and macabre moments in the film that suggest McQuown is a name to watch closely for those horror aficionado's.

Episodes in particular that include a family haunted in their home by a nefarious presence or a smartly constructed web cam show turned bad feel tightly and effectively constructed by McQuown, who eschews his small budgeted roots to deliver some disturbing and effective chills, providing a stark reminder as to why found footage provides such a great jumping off point for those working under right budget constraints.

In a genre that has been defined by those that have started with minimum funds to deliver classics of the field (the likes of Tobe Hooper, Sam Raimi and Rob Zombie), it's great to see another start-up like McQuown appear on the scene and it's likely Hollywood has taken notice of the wins McQuown manages to have within The Dark Tapes.

Final Say –

The Dark Tapes is a multi-award winning independent horror that genre enthusiasts should certainly track down. Filled with some impressive twists and some uniquely grisly moments, McQuown's low budget effort is one of recent times best found footage efforts and a nice calling card for a director who clearly has the tools required to become a key player in the horror film landscape.

Boring and old
dreamdoggie19 April 2017
Paranormal Activity all over again with some bits shamelessly copied from other similar movies, but with a budget that makes the special effects look bad. Not that it matters, even if the special effects were good, it would still be pretty terrible. I've seen better acting in x-rated movies.

The point of having a small budget is to improvise and try to generate something new, not copy stuff other people have made and do it badly. Almost seems like it was done badly on purpose, as in to cater to the hipster judges at the awards.

Don't get fooled by the awards and nominations. This movie either had no competition in the awards or they were the kind of awards where "everyone is a winner".
