A Hat Tip to Irwin Allen
Hajimoto062519 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I had never seen a movie based in New Zealand, and so I thought I'd give Aftershock a try. Honestly, I didn't have big expectations, but as it turns out, I was pleasantly surprised. This movie follows a classic formula...following the basic activities of a random group of people leading up to the big catastrophe, then following each in their efforts to survive it. Then, throw in the strong, public safety official who works tirelessly to solve the catastrophe and save lives. This formula was developed and honed by the great Irwin Allen, in movies like Earthquake, The Towering Inferno, and The Swarm, then copied by countless others in the 1970's, and I feel that the creators of Aftershock did a nice job of paying homage.

For a quick laundry list: The acting was good, the CGI of the tsunami was not so good, the story was actually very good, and it tied itself up nicely at the end. Also, the dog survived, something which always makes me like a movie a little more.

Aftershock is worth the investment of time...I give it a 7.

Good movie, but.....

Good movie/documentary. The beginning leads up to the moments before the catastrophe. The middle had my interest along with the findings of the dead, but the end where certain people talked about it a year later could have been a lot better. Did they rebuild? I don't know? Are they back to being a city again? I don't know? Just some unanswered questions at the end. It's still a great movie/documentary to watch. I would recommend it.

Compelling earthquake disaster film
Calicodreamin22 July 2019
Considering this is a made for TV movie, the acting and sets were actually pretty good. Definitely a low budget film, but they play to their strengths and keep the sets small so the disaster scenes look credible. The few cgi tv news reels could have been better (i.e using real footage) but it didn't take up too much air time. The separate storylines were compelling and credible. The ending "1 year since quake" interviews could have been better.

Too depressing for a disaster movie...which is saying a lot
Nyssareen_7712 May 2022
I love disaster movies, I was raised on movies like The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno and I am up to watch 2012 or Volcano anytime. A good disaster movie manages to dance the fine line between destruction and inspiration. This movie didn't dance that line very well in my opinion. The movie was well acted and the effects were decent, so that's why I gave it 4 stars, but I couldn't say that I actually liked the movie at all, I found it to be entirely too depressing. There were too many people who just died for no good reason. I fully understand that in a real disaster like this, many, many people would die for no good reason, but when you make a movie, you must always keep that line in mind.

This movie didn't come off as inspiring, or even warning, just depressing. Maybe it's a difference between American audiences and NZ audiences, but I don't imagine I'll ever watch this movie again, it was far, far too depressing.

Aftershock TV movie
jandlehandle8 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is seriously an awesome film, filmed in a slightly documentary type style. This movie feels very real - especially for those that live in New Zealand, and know the areas in Wellington that were affected. Good, classic kiwi film!

Set in Wellington, New Zealand, Present Day, it starts with a 3 minute lead up to a devastating earthquake and follows lives of survivors after the event.

It is a heart felt story, and I will definitely watch it again. There was even a warning in the Christchurch Press, a day or so before this aired on TV (on the 8th of October 2008) because of the possibility that if someone switched to TV3 at the wrong time, they may think that there really was an earth quake in Wellington.
